Garrett Whitlock agrees to 4-year contract extension

It wasn't the contract extension most were anticipating, but it certainly serves as important piece of the Red Sox' future.

The Red Sox announced Sunday that they had agreed to terms with Garrett Whitlock on a four-year contract extension that includes club options in 2027 and 2028.

The deal buys out all of Whitlock's arbitration-eligible years, while giving the Red Sox control over the pitcher for what would be his first year of free-agent eligibility (2027).

Whitlock was scheduled to make $700,000 this season, with one more offseason before getting the opportunity to experience arbitration. That progression has now been altered thanks to the extension.

The 25-year-old righty has evolved into one of the Red Sox' most important pitchers, coming off a season in which he totaled a 1.96 ERA in 73 1/3 innings.
