The Red Sox have been linked to a couple big names over the last week, including Seiya Suzuki and Freddie Freeman, but have yet to make a splash this spring.
Could Trevor Story be that splash? According to Audacy MLB Insider Jon Heyman, the Red Sox are one of four finalists to sign Story, along with the Giants and two other teams.
Heyman adds that Story is "prioritizing winning" and is "considering a short-term positional move, if necessary."
Story, 29, is a career shorstop who has spent his entire six-year career with the Colorado Rockies. Based on Heyman's reporting, it wouldn't be surprising if the Red Sox moved him to second base should they sign him.
Story hit .251 with 24 home runs, 75 RBIs and an .801 OPS in 142 games last season. That was a little bit of a dip from his previous three seasons, when his 162-game average was a .292 average, 37 homers, 99 RBIs and a .909 OPS. He finished in the top 12 in National League MVP voting three straight years from 2018-20.
ESPN's Buster Olney reported last week that some teams are concerned about an elbow issue Story dealt with last season, and that it may have been affecting his market.
