First we had the yellow jerseys. Now we have Carlos Febles’ fall.
The Red Sox’ third base coach took a spill Wednesday night as he was waving J.D. Martinez home in the eighth inning. Boston bested Baltimore 6-0.
Afterwards, Martinez offered his explanation for Febles’ stumble. “I told him I was going so fast that the wind knocked him over,” Martinez told reporters, per MassLive.
The slugger finally woke up from his September slump, going 3-for-4 with a towering home run and three RBI.
While Febles’ fall is fun to gawk about, we know Martinez’s bat is the real reason the Red Sox won. As our Rob Bradford points out, the Red Sox are 38-8 when Martinez manages three or more RBI, and now 79-24 when he hits at least one homer.
They’re also 1-0 when their third base coach falls down. They wore the yellow jerseys until they lost. Maybe Febles must keep slipping until they lose.
The Red Sox hold a half-game lead over the Mariners for the second wild card spot with four games to go.
