During his sixth-inning at-bat against Astros pitcher Hunter Brown Sunday, Jarren Duran could be heard on the NESN broadcast using a homophobic slur when responding to a heckling fan.
After the Red Sox' 10-2 loss to the Astros, both Duran and the team released statements addressing the incident.
In the statement from Duran sent to reporters, the outfielder said, "During tonight’s game, I used a truly horrific word when responding to a fan. I feel awful knowing how many people I offended and disappointed. I apologize to the entire Red Sox organization, but more importantly to the entire LGBTQ community. Our young fans are supposed to be able to look up to me as a role model, but tonight I fell far short of that responsibility. I will use this opportunity to educate myself and my teammates and to grow as a person."
The team's statement read, "The Red Sox addressed this incident with Jarren immediately following today’s game. We echo Jarren’s apology to our fans, especially to the LGBTQ community. We strive to be an organization that welcomes all fans to Fenway Park, and we will continue to educate our employees, players, coaches and staff on the importance of inclusivity."
It is unclear if Duran will be disciplined by the club. In 2017, former Blue Jays outfielder Kevin Pillar was suspended for two games for using a homophobic slur toward a Braves' pitcher. Toronto infielder Yunel Escobar's suspension in 2012 was for three games after he was seen wearing homophobic verbiage on his eye black.
Duran has started all 115 of the Red Sox' games this season, hitting .293 with an .857 OPS. He leads the American League in both doubles (36) and triples (13).
