The biggest domino of the MLB offseason has fallen. According to multiple reports, superstar outfielder Juan Soto has reportedly agreed to a 15-year, $765 million deal with the New York Mets. It is the largest deal in the history of professional sports.
The Boston Red Sox were one of five finalists in the bidding for Soto, along with the Mets, New York Yankees, Los Angeles Dodgers and Toronto Blue Jays.
The Red Sox were reportedly still in the running as of this weekend. MassLive's Sean McAdam reported Sunday night that their last, best offer was "around $700 million for 15 years."
The Red Sox will now need to quickly pivot to Plan B in free agency, with their needs including at least one frontline starting pitcher and a right-handed bat.
Stay tuned for more reaction and analysis to Soto's decision and where the Red Sox go next.
