According to one of hockey’s biggest insiders, the Penguins' former owners are looking into the possibility of buying the team back from current owners, Fenway Sports Group.
TSN and NHL Insider for The Athletic, Pierre Le Brun, says “hearing from sources that the group of Ron Burkle, Mario Lemieux and David Morehouse are investigating the possibility of buying back the Penguins from Fenway Sports.
LeBrun adds that the Fenway Group has been looking for sell a part of the team.
He adds the Lemieux group “declined to comment via a representative.”
And, LeBrun says Fenway “is already talking to another group.”
The Fenway Sports Group purchased the Penguins in 2021 and also own the Boston Red Sox and Liverpool Football Club along with SportsNet Pittsburgh and New England-based network NESN.
The PM Team reacted to the news and pointed out the tenuous relationship Lemieux has with FSG, with Andrew Fillipponi saying #66 was promised things by the group that never game to fruition.
Morehouse is a former Penguins executive and is the current “Senior Advisor to the President” of the Steelers.
And, in what might be something totally unrelated, Jaromir Jagr is in town...
