The Red Sox have announced that reliever Matt Barnes has agreed to a two-year contract extension with a club option for a third year.
Barnes has experienced a breakout year as the closer for the Red Sox, making his first All-Star team.
Heading into Sunday afternoon's game, the former first-round pick has converted 19 of 23 save opportunities totaling a 2.63 ERA. Barnes has struck out 62 in 37 innings.
Barnes was eligible for free agency after the 2021 season.
