Can Michael Kay hear alright?
During Thursday’s night’s YES broadcast of the Red Sox’s 5-4 win over the Yankees, the longtime play-by-play man said the Fenway Faithful has a reputation for being … quiet.
Really?
“Now, the Red Sox crowd is very quiet,” Kay said. “Players that have played for the Red Sox — and I’ve spoken with them — they say the difference between a Red Sox crowd and a Yankee crowd is, the Yankee crowd at Yankee Stadium will get loud to try and spur the team on to do something. And the Red Sox crowd reacts to something good. And they’re being shut out right now, so it’s kind of a quiet situation at Fenway Park.
“That’s long been the scouting report on the Red Sox crowd — not a knock on them. They’re reactive, rather than being proactive.”
Kay’s hypothesis hasn’t held up the last two nights. On Thursday, the Red Sox stormed back with a 5-4 extra-inning win. The crowd seemed plenty loud when Brooks Kriske couldn’t find the plate in the 10th.
Fenway Park was also loud Friday, but then again, Rafael Devers homered twice and knocked in five runs Friday.
I guess the Fenway crowd was just reacting to his greatness. Shame on them.
