Gary Washburn previews Celtics-Heat Game 5
The willing of the 2004 Boston Red Sox epic comeback vibes toward the 2023 Boston Celtics continued Wednesday with a message from the king of “the idiots.”
In a message shared by WBZ-TV’s Dan Roche, Kevin Millar urged the Celtics to continue with their comeback, still in its nascent stages, against the Miami Heat. Millar, the vocal leader of the 2004 Sox who famously had the team do shots of Jack Daniels before games against the New York Yankees, told anyone who would listen 19 years ago to not let the Red Sox win one. One win led to another, to improbably another and, well, the rest is incomparable baseball and Boston sports history.
The Celtics started with the “don’t let us win one” mantra before Game 4 in Miami, a 116-99 win for Boston. Heck, even Alex Rodriguez and Derek Jeter were in attendance for Game 4 to help give off more 2004 vibes. Still down 3-1 in the Eastern Conference Finals best of seven, the Celtics will need every bit of good will, karma and positive history, in addition to a strong defensive effort, to overcome a team that won the first two games of the series at the Garden – place where the Celitcs unbelievably have a losing record this postseason.
Still, Millar wants the Garden to make their presence felt tonight.
“This is Game 5 at the Garden! I wanna hear you cowboy up! Let’s go!”
We’ll see if any other members of the 2004 Red Sox are in the house at TD Garden Thursday night. Can’t imagine we’ll be seeing any other members of the 2004 Yankees in attendance courtside.
