It's no secret Nick Pivetta wears his emotions on his sleeve perhaps more than any other Red Sox' pitcher. So when cameras caught him in an animated discussion with catcher Christian Vazquez after the first inning Wednesday night, it shouldn't have been too eye-opening.
But, still ... It was a different look for a pitcher and catcher, particularly that early in the game.

"We were just talking about pitch sequencing and getting back into the zone," Pivetta explained. "Christian is a great game-caller. He was just getting me back in my zone, the leader that he is, just helping me move forward. I think that’s really important having that relationship with him, being able to communicate. Him just getting me back to where I need to be and moving forward from there."
The starting pitcher added, "I mean we just kept moving forward with our game plan and competing in the zone. We work really well together. I enjoy throwing to him. He’s a competitor back there, I’m a competitor on the mound and when we click together it’s really good."
Whatever page Pivetta got on after that 36-pitch, one-run first inning was the right one, with the Red Sox starter giving up just one more run the rest of the way while completing six innings on 111 pitches.
