How MLB teams are attacking social media heading into 2023
The Red Sox are turning to a familiar American League East name to bolster their outfield depth.
Late Wednesday night, former Blue Jay Raimel Tapia took to Instagram for an announcement that he will be joining the Sox. According to a source, it will be on a minor-league deal.
The 28-year-old left-handed hitter played in 128 games with the Blue Jays in 2022, hitting .265 with a .672 OPS, hitting seven homers and stealing eight bases. The season before Tapia was an everyday player for the Rockies, hitting .273 with a .699 OPS and 20 steals.
One of his most noteworthy moments of 2022 came against the Red Sox, hitting an inside-the-park grand slam at Fenway Park after Jarren Duran lost the ball in the lights.
The Red Sox suddenly have a plethora of outfield options, with Alex Verdugo, Rob Refsnyder, Kiké Hernadnez, Masa Yoshida, Jarren Duran and Adam Duvall (yet to be formally added) all on the 40-man roster. Tapia will represent the most noteworthy non-roster outfield presence in Fort Myers, with prospect Ceddanne Rafaela slotted to begin the season at Triple-A.
