The Boston Red Sox have added another starting pitcher, acquiring Johan Oviedo in a five-player trade with the Pittsburgh Pirates.
The full trade, according to MassLive's Chris Cotillo, has the Red Sox getting Oviedo and two prospects (lefty reliever Tyler Samaniego and catcher Adonys Guzman) in exchange for outfielder Jhostynxon Garcia and 18-year-old right-handed starter Jesus Travieso.
Oviedo, 27, has a 4.24 ERA 81 major-league appearances (67 starts) across parts of five seasons. His best season came in 2023, when he went 9-14 with a 4.31 ERA in 177.2 innings across 32 starts.
After that season, however, Oviedo underwent Tommy John surgery and missed the entire 2024 season. He then suffered a lat injury that forced him to miss the start of the 2025 season. He finally returned to action on Aug. 4 and made nine starts down the stretch with a 3.57 ERA.
Oviedo is a massive right-hander, standing at 6-foot-6, 275 pounds. Born in Cuba, Oviedo originally signed with the St. Louis Cardinals as an international free agent in 2016. He began his big-league career with the Cards in 2020 before being traded to Pittsburgh in 2022.
Garcia had emerged as one of the Red Sox's top prospects over the last couple years, and made his big-league debut with five appearances for Boston this past season. He faced an uphill battle in an already-crowded Red Sox outfield, however.
