The Red Sox' bullpen takes a big hit with Justin Slaten IL stint

Why Marcelo Mayer is ready for the majors

The Red Sox made two notable moves Sunday morning:

- They sent reliever Justin Slaten to the injured list with shoulder inflammation, recalling Luis Guerrero.
- Nick Sogard was sent to Triple-A Worcester, leading to the promotion of Nate Eaton.
- Blake Sabol was designated for assignment to make room for Eaton the 40-man roster.

Eaton has 72 games of major league experience, last playing in the big leagues in 2023 with Kansas City. In 53 games with Triple-A Worcester Eaton is hitting .277 with a .811 OPS and five home runs. He is slightly more productive against lefty pitchers (.844 OPS) compared to right-handers (.799).

The Slaten news potentially offers the biggest blow to the Red Sox considering his role in the team's bullpen. Serving as the second most trusted high-leverage reliever (after Aroldis Chapman), Slaten had managed a 3.47 ERA and .465 OPS against in 24 appearances.

The righty appeared in the eighth inning 16 times, coming in for one-run games on 13 occasions.
