Red Sox execute late-night trade for Giants reliever

Just moments before the baseball world was stunned by the trade of Lucas Giolito and Reynaldo Lopez to the Angels - who have now declared Shohei Ohtani will not be dealt - from the White Sox for Los Angeles' No. 2 and 3 prospects, the Red Sox got the Trade Deadline buzzing ... at least a little bit.

Just before midnight, after the Red Sox moved to eight games over .500 for the first time this season with their win over the Braves, the team announced the acquisition of reliever Mauricio Llovera in a deal with the Giants.

Going back to San Francisco is Single-A pitcher Marques Johnson. To make room on the 40-man roster, the Red Sox transferred pitcher Kaleb Ort to the 60-day disabled list.

Llovera was recently designated for assignment by the Giants after making five appearances for San Francisco, giving up one earned run in 5 1/3 innings. In Triple-A he managed a 3.92 ERA with a .211 opponents batting average in 17 games (2 starts).

The 27-year-old right-hander will need to be put on the major league roster, having exhausted all his options. He last pitched on July 21, completing a flawless inning against the Nationals before being designated for assignment by the Giants.
