It was a tough day for the American League at Sunday's All-Star Futures Game at Coors Field in Denver as the National League cruised to an 8-3 win, but Red Sox prospect Jeter Downs was one of the few bright spots.
Downs, Boston's No. 3 prospect according to SoxProspects.com, recorded the AL's only extra-base hit of the game and two of their three RBIs, ripping a two-run double to deep left field in the seventh. The 22-year-old middle infielder struck out in the fifth inning in his only other at bat of the game.
Downs, one of the players acquired in the Mookie Betts trade, is hitting .234 with a .686 OPS, seven home runs, 17 RBIs and 12 steals in 44 games for Triple-A Worcester this season.
Pitcher Brayan Bello, the Red Sox' No. 7 prospect, also got into the game, but struggled a little bit while recording two outs. Bello came in with one out in the third, but immediately gave up a double to right. Then he threw a wild pitch that advanced the runner to third, and the run then scored on a hard-hit sacrifice fly. Bello then got a line-out to second to end the inning.
Bello, 22, has a 3.06 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and 22 strikeouts in 17 2/3 innings since being promoted to Double-A Portland last month.
