On to the next plan.
After the Red Sox were reportedly finalists for the services of Japanese pitcher Kohei Arihara earlier Friday, it appears as though the Sox' pursuit has fallen short.
According to Ken Rosenthal, the Rangers have come to terms with the 28-year-old Arihara, beating out both Boston and the Padres. The deal is for two years worth between $6-7 million according to multiple reports.
Arihara has a career 3.74 ERA for the Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters, winning Pacific League Rookie of the Year 2015. His best season came in 2019 when the righty totaled a 2.46 ERA in 164 1/3 innings.
He is considered a mid-rotation talent whose fastball sits in the mid-90's.
The right-hander had been posted by the Ham Fighters with a deadline to pick a team coming Dec. 26. The Rangers will owe the Ham Fighters 20 percent of the first $25 million of the contract signed and $17.5 percent of the following $25 million. The number drops to 15 percent after passing $50 million
