Chad Tracy is no longer "interim." The Boston Red Sox announced on Tuesday that they have officially named Tracy their full-time manager and signed him to a three-year extension through the 2029 season, with a club option for 2030.
In the same press release, the Red Sox also announced that they have exercised the club's 2029 and 2030 options on chief baseball officer Craig Breslow, locking in Breslow and Tracy as key pieces of the team's leadership for the foreseeable future.
Tracy was named interim manager on April 26 after the team fired Alex Cora and most of his staff amid a disappointing 10-17 start to the season. The Red Sox had the second-worst record in the American League at the time Tracy took over. Since then, they've gone 74-55, which is the second-best record in the AL and the fifth-best record in the Majors during that time.
The highlight of Boston's turnaround under Tracy was a 27-3 stretch from July 3 through August 7, the best 30-game stretch in franchise history. That included a 15-game winning streak, tied for the longest in team history.
The Red Sox clinched a playoff berth over the weekend, becoming just the fourth team in MLB history to make the playoffs after being 14 games under .500 earlier in the season. They are set to face the Yankees in New York in the wild card round beginning next Tuesday.
It will be the Red Sox' second straight playoff appearance during Breslow's tenure, after missing the postseason during his first year in charge in 2024.
