Marcelo Mayer explains his decision to get surgery
The trade deadline might have come and gone, but the Red Sox haven't stopped adding to their major league roster.
As was first reported by ESPN's Jeff Passan, the Sox are on the verge of bringing in veteran first baseman Nathaniel Lowe. MassLive was first to report the team was showing interest late last week, with Passan surfacing that the team and the 30-year-old were finalizing a deal late Sunday night.
Lowe had been designated for assignment by the Nationals before clearing waivers over the weekend.
The left-handed hitter was struggling through the worst season of his seven-year career, having joined the Nationals this past offseason after being dealt from the Rangers in exchange for reliever Robert Garcia.
In 119 games for the Nationals, Lowe hit .216 with a .665 OPS and 16 home runs. He has been significantly better against righty pitching, managing a .732 OPS with 14 homers.
Lowe's struggles in 2025 appeared to be worsening, leading up to his DFA by the Nationals, as he went 3-for-33 in August after hitting just .205 with a .619 OPS in July.
Before 2025, Lowe was considered a reliable, power-hitting starting first baseman for the Rangers, winning an American League Gold Glove in 2023. Since 2021, only Matt Olson and Freddie Freeman have played more games at first base than the former 13th-round pick of the Rays.
Lowe will be eligible for free agency after the 2025 season, having secured $10.3 million for this season after losing his arbitration case to the Nationals.
Lowe's spot with the Red Sox would seemingly be that currently occupied by Abraham Toro, who has been serving as the team's primary option at first base against right-handed starters.
After a strong start, Toro has tailed off, going just 7-for-43 (.163) with a .480 in 12 games this month. Since July 10, the switch-hitter is batting .169 with a .491 OPS, having started 24 games.
The Red Sox are 22nd in MLB in OPS from the first base position, which was turned over to Romy Gonzalez and Toro after Triston Casas' early-May, season-ending injury.
