The Red Sox picked up an interesting arm Thursday afternoon. Why would we classify a waiver wire pick up like John Schreiber as "interesting"? Well, when you see him pitch you will get the idea.
Schreiber, who was designated for assignment by the Tigers to make room for recently-signed outfielder Nomar Mazara, has been added to the Red Sox' 40-man roster, with Chris Sale being moved to the 60-man to make room for the 26-year-old righty.
Schreiber has 28 games of major league experience, all with Detroit, specializing in getting out right-handed hitters. With a side-arm motion, the former 15th-round pick held righty hitters to just a .590 OPS in his final full minor-league season before being promoted to the big leagues for the first time in 2019.
He struggled out of the gate in 2019, making his debut on Aug. 9, but rebounded to now allow a run in six of his final seven outings. Schreiber picked up where he left off when making the team in 2020, failing to give up a run in nine of his first 10 appearances.
After signing for just a $6,000 bonus, Schreiber got his chance at the majors thanks to an impressive run through the minors in which he totaled a 1.99 ERA and .191 batting average against in 204 innings.
