The Red Sox have signed a free agent. No, it's not the starting pitcher many fans have been waiting for, but it is a right-handed power bat who could compete for a roster spot.
According to multiple reports, Boston has signed first baseman C.J. Cron to a minor-league contract. The deal was first reported by MassLive's Chris Cotillo.
Cron, 34, could challenge Bobby Dalbec for a roster spot as depth behind Triston Casas at first base and Masataka Yoshida at designated hitter.
Cron was an All-Star two years ago with the Colorado Rockies when he had 29 home runs and 102 RBIs in 150 games with a .257 batting average and .783 OPS. He topped 25 homers and 70 RBIs in four of five seasons from 2018-22.
Cron took a step back last year, though, in a season that saw him split time between the Rockies and Los Angeles Angels while also missing time with a back injury. He finished with 12 home runs and 37 RBIs in 71 games with a .248 average and .729 OPS.
