The Red Sox have been talking about their need for additional pitching depth. They got some Wednesday in the form of a familiar American League East face.

The Sox signed former Tampa Bay Rays hurler Matt Andriese to a one-year deal with a team option for 2022. The pitcher will receive $2.1 million for 2021.

The 31-year-old Andriese, who was a third-round pick of the Padres before being dealt to Tampa Bay in 2014, has primarily been a reliever for the past three seasons.

Pitching for the Angels in 2020, he made 16 appearances (1 start) while totaling a 4.50 ERA. The previous season Adriese appeared in 54 games for the Diamondbacks, who had traded for the right-hander from the Rays the previous season.

In 2016 and '17 he served mostly as a starter for the Rays, going 12-12 with a 4.74 ERA in that role.

Andriese has pitched four times in Fenway Park, with his best outing coming in 2017 when he held the Red Sox to two runs over five innings. For his career, he has given up 15 earned runs over 14 innings in Boston.
