Red Sox trade keeps looking better: Heath Hembree outrighted by Phillies

If the optics for the Phillies when it came to their Trade Deadline deal didn't look bad enough, they just got worse.

Heath Hembree, who was shipped to Philadelphia with Brandon Workman for Nick Pivetta and Connor Seabold, has been outrighted off the Phillies' major-league roster and can now elect free agency.

Hembree's stint with the Phils was disastrous, giving up runs in eight of his 11 appearances with seven of the 17 hits surrendered serving as as home runs. He finished the season on the injured list due to a strained right elbow.

Considering the struggles by Workman (a free agent) during his 14 appearances with Philadelphia (6.92 ERA, .377 batting average against), the Red Sox' August haul of two controllable pitchers appears to have become a steal.
