The Red Sox finally have a real first baseman.

After rejecting San Diego’s attempt to trade him to the Nationals — who were among the 10 teams on his no-trade list — Eric Hosmer is on his way to Boston, per Audacy MLB Insider Jon Heyman.

Boston’s interest predates Chaim Bloom’s era with the organization. While pursuing J.D. Martinez before 2018, the Red Sox were also linked to Hosmer. Martinez was clearly the superior offensive option of the two, but Hosmer is a four-time gold glove winner — although, he hasn’t won one since picking the Padres over the Red Sox.

Hosmer has the ability to opt out of his contract after this season, after 2023 and after 2024. Given he’s only posted a .737 OPS since inking his eight-year deal, the first baseman will likely stick around.
