The signings of Enrique Hernandez and Marwin Gonzalez made it clear that Chaim Bloom and Co. value versatility, and now they've found another utility player.
According to multiple reports, the Red Sox have agreed to a minor-league deal with Danny Santana. Julian McWilliams of the Boston Globe was first to report the news.
Santana came out of nowhere to have a breakout 2019 season with the Rangers. After hitting just 13 home runs with a .667 OPS in his first 364 MLB games from 2014-18, the switch-hitter exploded for a 28-home run season that saw him hit .283 with an .857 OPS, 81 RBIs, 81 runs scored and 21 steals in 130 games.
Santana played all four infield positions and all three outfield positions that season, playing regularly while moving all over the field.
His follow-up campaign last season didn't go nearly as well, though. Santana, now 30, tried to play through an elbow injury that ultimately required surgery and wound up playing just 15 games, struggling to a .145 average and .511 OPS.
