The Yankees had all eyes on them in the opening weekend of the 2025 season, as their “torpedo bats” took the league by storm after the Bronx Bombers smashed 15 home runs in their opening series sweep of the Brewers, including a franchise record nine bombs in a 20-run outburst on Saturday.
The home run barrage had all of baseball talking about the oddly shaped bats, which have the thickest part of the barrel moved down closer to the label, so that players like Anthony Volpe, who tend to make contact further down on the bat, could potentially have more success. Jazz Chisholm, also seen swinging a torpedo bat, already has three home runs on the year.
The bats stirred up all kinds of debate among fans, ranging from the bats being good or bad for the game, or even illegal (they are completely legal).
Regardless of how fans feel about them, ESPN’s Buster Olney revealed on the Sunday Night Baseball broadcast that the fad is catching on, and the Braves are already springing into action.
“After what happened [Saturday], the Braves put in an order for some of these bats,” Olney said. “If the Yankees are going to keep hitting like that, everyone is gonna want to do it.”
It sure looked like Atlanta could have used an order or torpedo bats on Sunday, as they were held to just one hit against the Padres, who faced the minimum in the series finale of what was a four-game mopping of the Braves to begin the season.
Other teams have already begun using the torpedo bats, as multiple players on other clubs were seen wielding them in game action on Sunday. So, whatever fans feel about them, the rest of the league wants in on what the Yanks have made a sensation to begin the new season.
