There may not be a lot of good news for the Red Sox right now. But at least their top pitching prospect is flourishing.
Double-A Portland right-hander Brayan Bello threw a seven-inning no-hitter Thursday for the Sea Dogs in the nightcap of their doubleheader win over the Reading Fightin’ Phils. The flame-throwing righty allowed an unearned run and struck out five.
Portland won 3-1.
Bello, who recently cracked Baseball America’s Top 100 prospect list, was named the Red Sox’ Minor League Pitcher of the Year last season. This year, he’s 3-2 with a 1.95 ERA, 37 strikeouts, and 11 walks in 27.2 innings.
On Thursday, Bello worked at 96-98 miles per hour with his fastball to compliment his slider and changeup.
Though the Red Sox have bolstered their farm system under Chaim Bloom, they have a dearth of pitching prospects who are Major League-ready. Bello isn’t there yet, but he’s on his way — especially if he delivers more outings like Thursday.
