When the Red Sox selected high school shortstop Marcelo Mayer fourth overall Sunday night, it was hard not to think ahead to what might happen with current All-Star shortstop Xander Bogaerts in a few years when Mayer is ready for the majors.
If Bogaerts is worried about any of that, he isn't showing it. In fact, Bogaerts was one of the first Red Sox to welcome Mayer to the organization, doing so on Monday in Denver in a video shared by the team's Twitter account.
It's hard to hear much of what was said, but Mayer says, "It's an honor," at one point and Bogaerts ends the brief conversation by telling Mayer to "hit bombs." The two hug and fist bump during the meeting as well.
As for the future, worrying about what the Mayer selection means for Bogaerts feels like a bit of a fool's errand. A lot can change over the next few years before Mayer potentially arrives in Boston, including possibly the position one of them will be playing then.
Check out the video of their meeting below. (P.S.: If you're wondering about the "44" on Bogaerts' jersey, it's part of MLB's tribute to Hank Aaron.)
