Where the Red Sox stand in terms of fans in the stands

The first sign of optimism that the Red Sox actually might be playing in front of fans when the 2021 season kicks off came Tuesday when the team announced JetBlue Park would be at 24 percent capacity for spring training.

Then came news from Greg Hill on the Greg Hill Show Wednesday morning that he had heard the Red Sox were telling sponsors that the expectation is that Fenway Park would be at 20 percent capacity for the April 1 opener.

A source has told WEEI.com, however, that the Red Sox have not officially approached the commonwealth of Massachusetts or the city of Boston about approval to have Fenway fans.

Neither the Celtics or Bruins have played with fans at TD Garden this season.

With the Major League Baseball Players Association recently voting down a proposal from MLB to delay the season, the plan remains in place to play 162 games starting with the home game against the Orioles.

The Red Sox kick off spring training with pitchers and catchers reporting Feb. 17 with the team's first full squad workout coming Feb. 22. The 24 percent capacity cap at the 17 JetBlue Park will allow for about 2,400 fans.
