(670 The Score) On a few occasions over the years, Cubs president of baseball operations Theo Epstein has referenced the need for change atop a baseball operations department every 10 years or so.
It appears he'll follow that rule himself.
Epstein will meet with Cubs chairman Tom Ricketts next week to discuss his future with the organization, and their marriage almost certainly won't last beyond 2021, David Kaplan of NBC Sports Chicago reported Saturday. Epstein is under contract through 2021 but has no desire to sign a third contract with the Cubs, Kaplan reported.
The possibility also exists that Epstein could leave the Cubs sooner if he and Ricketts believe that is best for the organization, Kaplan reported.
The Cubs were swept by the Marlins in two games in the best-of-three wild-card series after going 34-26 and winning the NL Central. The Cubs won the World Series in 2016 and have advanced to the NL Championship Series on three occasions in Epstein's tenure, which dates back to October 2010, but they've either exited in the wild-card round or missed the playoffs altogether in each of the past three seasons.
Epstein is scheduled to meet with reporters Monday.
