New England Revolution coach Bruce Arena has been placed on administrative leave as the result of an ongoing investigation being conducted by Major League Soccer into allegations of "insensitive and inappropriate remarks," the team announced Tuesday.

"The organization takes any allegations of workplace misconduct extremely seriously and is working closely with the League and fully cooperating with its investigation," the Revs added in a statement.

It was not clear as of Tuesday afternoon exactly what the nature of the remarks was.

The Athletic reported that Arena was not around the team on Sunday or Monday and that players were told on Sunday that he would be away from the team for an unspecified amount of time. Technical director Curt Onalfo and assistant coach Richie Williams will be in charge of the team while Arena is on leave.

Arena, 71, is in his fifth season in charge of the Revs. He became MLS' all-time winningest coach last year and led New England to its first-ever Supporters' Shield in 2021 as the team with the best regular-season record. He previously won five MLS Cups with D.C. United (1996, 1997) and the LA Galaxy (2011, 2012 and 2014). He is also the all-time winningest coach for the U.S. Men's National Team, having coached them from 1998-2006 and again in 2017.

The Revolution are currently second in the Eastern Conference with a 12-4-7 record and 43 points through 23 games this season.
