'Boomer And Gio': It's Just Nice To See Mets Playing Winning Baseball

Are the Mets really doing this?

It seemed like Mickey Callaway's team was getting set to be sellers at the deadline after a disappointing campaign, but now things might be turning around. The Mets completed a two-game sweep of the Twins on Wednesday and have now won four games in a row, as they look to be an improved team following the All-Star festivities.

They've still got a lot of work to do to put themselves back in the playoff picture, but Boomer Esiason's belief in the Mets grows with each day.

"Let's just see what happens," Esiason said on Thursday's "Boomer and Gio" show. "I think this is like what they were saying when they were coming out of the All-Star break … I wouldn't be surprised if they start moving some guys, but in the meantime they are winning. They are winning and it was an impressive two game win over the Twins. I appreciate it, I know that they're only 44-51. I know they are 13 games out of first place, but, you know what, it's just nice to be able to see a winning baseball team."

With 67 games left in the season the Mets aren't out of it yet, but even with this hot streak they still have a mountain to climb. The NL East is out of their reach, as the Braves continue to soar. But New York is now only five games out of the wildcard.

Gregg Giannotti pushed back on Esiason. He isn't a believer in this resurgence, and he doesn't think the Mets can be called a winning baseball team yet.

"Where are you seeing this winning baseball team? They're still seven games under .500. They're not a winning baseball team, they're a team that won a couple of games. They're a team that's still got the second-worst record in the National League."

The Mets actually only have the third-worst record in the NL, but Giannotti is right that it might be too little too late for this year's team. He went as far as to claim that he wishes the team would keep struggling, so that hopes wouldn't rise again and the Mets could actually embrace rebuilding to best prepare for the future.

"We wouldn't be talking about them anymore. It would be great. They'd disappear, they'd trade off some guys. We'd focus on the teams that can actually do something. And then they'd be gone, but instead they gotta win a couple games, hang around, people have to try to convince themselves that they're going to do something, until they fall apart again and we rinse and repeat and then we're in the same spot … they're dead. They stink. They're not any good."
