Corey Ballentine, a sixth-round draft pick by the Giants on Saturday, was injured in a shooting early Sunday morning in Topeka, Kansas.
The 12:45 a.m. shooting left one of Ballentine's college teammates at Wasburn, Dwane Simmons, 23, dead on a street, according to the university and media reports.
Ballentine's injuries are not considered life-threatening, and the 23-year-old, Jamaican-born cornerback is expected to make a full recovery in a matter of weeks, NFL.com reported. He is currently hospitalized.
The Giants selected Ballentine with the 180th overal pick Saturday. The 5-foot-11, 196-pounder had 50 tackles and three interceptions last season for the Division II Ichabods.
"We are aware of the tragic situation and continue to gather information," the Giants said in a statement provided to NFL.com. "Our thoughts are with Dwane Simmons' family, friends and teammates and the rest of the Washburn community."
Washburn had scheduled a 3 p.m. news conference to discuss Ballentine being drafted, but has postponed it.
“Any time we lose a student it is a sad occasion, but it is particularly poignant to lose a student through such a senseless act," Washburn University President Jerry Farley said in a statement. "Both Dwane and Corey have been great examples and representatives of the football team and of Washburn University in general. This was a terrible way to end a day which should have been a day of celebration and a day to look forward to Dwane’s upcoming year at Washburn and the beginning of Corey’s professional career.”
Police are still investigating the shooting.
