Keith Hernandez On WFAN: 'Smith Needs To Be Meaner'

Former Mets great and SNY broadcaster Keith Hernandez joined WFAN's "Carlin, Maggie & Bart" in studio Monday afternoon to discuss his new book "I'm Keith Hernandez," which hits shelves Tuesday.

The book covers Hernandez's career, his life off the field, the grit and toughness of the 1986 World Series Champion Mets, and a multitude of other topics.

Speaking of toughness, Hernandez feels that is something that is missing from the game today.

"I don't see a lot of mental toughness in the males anymore...guys that grit their teeth and be mean out there," Hernandez told CMB. "You're playing a game. There's too much shake your hand, go out for a cup of coffee after. I don't know where it starts. I just don't see that real jerk out there. You have to beat me. Come get me here I am. I don't see that very much."

One of those guys missing that according to Hernandez is Mets first baseman Dominic Smith, who has spent almost the entire season in triple-A Las Vegas.

"It's right there for Dominic if he wants to grab it and take it. He's an easy going guy and I'd like for him him to be a little meaner."

In other Mets news, Matt Harvey is now with the Reds after the Mets traded him for catcher Devin Mesoraco. What exactly went wrong with Harvey these last few years?

"He wanted the cart before the horse. He pitched great in the World Series. He had his moments. He's had serious injury. The thoracic outlet surgery is a grave concern, he may never be the same. There's another case of a guy, comes up, throwing 98, throwing a 92 MPH slider, and that arm isn't going to hold up. They come up and can just blow and then all of a sudden you lost a foot or six inches, and now you got to pitch to corners, and they can't do it."

Maggie finished the interview asking Hernandez about his world-renowned mustache, whether he's shaved it, and if he ever will again.

"I have around three or four times," Hernandez said. "I have the same upper lip as my father. I have the same lower teeth as my father. When he used to get in my face when I was a kid and I'd look up at him and he'd woof at me if I got in trouble and I would just focus on his mouth, and then when I was in high school I was looking in the mirror starting to shave the little peach fuzz, and I looked in the mirror and I go 'oh my god, I got my dad's mouth. I got to cover this up.' So that's why I grew the mustache."
