Giants Sign Former Cowboys RB Rod Smith

By WFAN.com

The Giants have some options at the backup running back spot behind Saquon Barkley. They already have Wayne Gallman and Paul Perkins behind the franchise RB, but now have another back to join the competition.

The Giants announced Wednesday that they have signed former Cowboys RB Rod Smith. The 27-year-old has played the last four seasons with the Cowboys and spent a year with the Seahawks the year before in his rookie season.

Smith played all 16 games last season for the first time in his five-year NFL career, rushing it 44 times for 127 yards and a TD, while catching nine balls for 60 yards. Smith started the regular season finale against the Giants, running it 12 times for 35 yards and a one-yard TD.

Smith's best season came in 2017, rushing it 55 times for 232 yards and four rushing TDs and one receiving TD. The Giants know him well as the best game of his career came against Big Blue in 2017 in a 30-10 Cowboys win. Smith scored two TDs that game against the Giants on a 15-yard run and a 81-yard reception. He ran for 47 yards and a career-high 113 receiving yards.

The Giants running backs are now: Barkley, Smith, Gallman, Perkins, Eli Penny, Robert Martin and Jonathan Hilliman.
