The Mets suggested Tuesday that the disabled list could be in Yoenis Cespedes' immediate future.

General manager Sandy Alderson told reporters at Citi Field that an MRI on Tuesday revealed Cespedes has a mild strain of his right hip flexor. He's not in the lineup Tuesday night against the Blue Jays, but is available to pinch-hit.

Cespedes suffered the injury May 6 against the Colorado Rockies.

"He has not shown any improvement over the last couple of days," Alderson said. "Now, he's still functional. And this is not a typical injury where running or what have you is necessarily going to lead to greater injury, but we are going to be careful."

Alderson said the team will monitor Cespedes, who has repeatedly dealt with leg injuries the past couple of years, over the "next day or two and see how things go."

Facing the possibility of a Cespedes DL stint, manager Mickey Callaway must weigh the possible benefits of using him as a pinch-hitter against being able to back-date his start on the disabled list another couple of days.

"We have to have an obvious chance to win the game if we're going to use Ces tonight, in my opinion," Callaway said.

In 37 games this season, Cespedes is batting .255 with eight home runs and 28 RBIs.
