We all knew second baseman Jed Lowrie was signing with the Mets, but Tuesday, the team made the deal official.
The All-Star infielder has signed a two-year contract worth $20 million, according to an official press release. Lowrie will be introduced by the team Wednesday at 2 p.m. at a news conference at Citi Field.
Mets GM Brodie Van Wagenen will speak to members of the media following the news conference. It is the first time Van Wagenen will speak to the media in several weeks. The Mets GM will address the state of the offseason, acquiring Keon Broxton and J.D. Davis, trading Kevin Plawecki, and what could be left for the team.
Lowrie, 34, is a former client of Van Wagenen. The switch-hitting second baseman mostly played there with the A's in 2018, but can play all infield positions, giving the Mets some versatility and depth. Lowrie put up career-highs in home runs (23) and RBI (99) last season.
In 11 seasons in the big leagues, Lowrie has a .262 average with 104 homers and 509 RBIs in 1,109 games.
Lowrie is expected to be an everyday player, but it won't come at second base, considering the Mets have Robinson Cano there. We may see Lowrie play mostly third and some first base. He joins Todd Frazier, Amed Rosario, Jeff McNeil, J.D. Davis, and potentially Peter Alonso in a crowded infield.
