Mets relief pitcher Drew Smith was expected to be part of the 2019 bullpen. That is no longer the case. Smith needs Tommy John Surgery and will miss the entire season, manager Mickey Callaway said Monday.
The right-hander had tossed four scoreless innings so far in Spring Training, walking three and striking out four.
With the 25-year-old Smith done for the year, it could open up a spot for Tyler Bashlor or Hector Santiago to make the team. Santiago would give the Mets a third lefty out of the bullpen, if they do end up having Luis Avilan on the roster.
The locks for the bullpen come Opening Day are: Edwin Diaz, Jeurys Familia, Justin Wilson, Seth Lugo and Robert Gsellman.
