Two weeks into spring training, the Mets' infield depth is already being tested.

The team announced Tuesday morning that third baseman Todd Frazier has a left oblique strain. He will travel to New York to receive a cortisone shot Tuesday and then return to Port St. Lucie, Florida, to begin treatment and rehab. The team has not given a timetable for his return.

Frazier, 33, has not yet played in a spring training game this season. He said he felt some discomfort during live batting practice Monday, and an MRI revealed the strain.

"It's a new injury," Frazier told reporters. "I was hitting the ball great. Just at the end, felt a little tightness on my left side.

"I came to spring training here in shape and felt really good, and then this happens. So it's frustrating."

Hamstring and rib injuries limited Frazier to just 115 games last season.

Last week, newly signed infielder Jed Lowrie was diagnosed with a sprained left knee. It's unclear whether he'll be available for opening day.

With Frazier and Lowrie on the shelf, the Mets will be forced to look for alternatives at third base. Possible options include J.D. Davis, Adeiny Hechavarria and Jeff McNeil, who was moved from the infield to the outfield this spring.
