Bill Polian On WFAN: Dave Gettleman Has Plan For Giants

It might not be clear to Giants fans, but Dave Gettleman's mentor says the general manager indeed has a plan for rebuilding Big Blue.

"It starts with solidifying the fronts on both sides of the ball," Bill Polian told WFAN's Maggie Gray and Bart Scott on Tuesday. "It's obvious that there's still work to do there."

Polian said Gettleman has done a good job by putting "the two most key pieces in place": Daniel Jones at quarterback and Saquon Barkley at running back. 

"So that's taken care of, and it's a lot easier to move faster when you have those pieces in place," said the six-time NFL Executive of the Year. "If you're searching for them, it really takes a lot of the oxygen out of the room."

After being hired as the general manager of the Buffalo Bills in 1986, Polian hired Gettleman as a scouting intern. Gettleman went on to work in Buffalo's scouting department for seven years before rising through the ranks to eventually become the GM of the Panthers and now the Giants.

"The game was never work for him," recalled Polian, who also served as the general manager of the Panthers and Colts. "It was a calling. And he left no stone unturned in terms of trying to make sure that every single base was covered in terms of evaluating players, in terms of systems and things like that. Pure football man. And it didn't take long to figure that out. There was no great skill on my part. It stood out like a sore thumb, so I was thrilled to have Dave join us when I became the general manager in Buffalo."
