'Boomer And Gio': One Perfect Night For Mets

Tuesday night was a perfect night for the Mets, WFAN's Gregg Giannotti said.

In the opener of the two-game Subway Series at Citi Field, the Mets rode the arm of Zack Wheeler and the bats of J.D. Davis and Michael Conforto to a 4-2 win over the Yankees.

"For one night last night at Citi Field, the Mets had a wonderful evening," Giannotti said on Wednesday's "Boomer and Gio" show. "It was perfect. It was great. Everything worked out. It was a comeback win. The Mets' bullpen performed; the Yankees' bullpen did not. The place was filled. (General manager) Brodie (Van Wagenen) is out there with The 7 Line having a blast. Everything was perfect for one night with the Mets."

The Mets pulled out the victory by scoring three runs in the eighth inning, and then Edwin Diaz recorded the save.

"Last night was a night where you were just waiting for the Mets' bullpen to implode, and it never did," said Boomer Esiason, Giannotti's co-host. "And it did exactly what it's supposed to do. And doesn't this just figure that the Mets are the ones that stop the Yankees' home run streak? It's crazy."

The Yankees had homered in an MLB-record 31 consecutive games entering Tuesday night.

"I felt like maybe the Yankees are still hungover a little bit, a little jet lag (from their London trip)," Esiason said. "Who knows? But for one night, the Mets actually looked like the way that they were built to look."

Added Giannotti: "When you have a night like that and you're beating essentially the best team in baseball in the Yankees, it shows you that there is something there, and that's what we've been saying, that's what we've been screaming about is that they aren't a terrible baseball team. They've just got one of the worst bullpens we've ever seen, and the starting pitching, for a large majority of the year, has not been up to par."

Gio also applauded Van Wagenen for sitting with The 7 Line Army fan group in right-center field, a gesture that required some courage considering he's the architect of a team that sits 11 games behind the Atlanta Braves for the NL East lead.

"I don't know, it resonated with me that he kept his promise because he said it back in February that he was going to go do that, and he did it," Giannotti said. "And the season obviously has not gone the way that he wanted it to go. And he went out there, and he did it."
