There are currently eight teams in Major League Baseball without a manager.
After every season ends there are always various firings around the league, but this year has been on another level. The Mets are one of those teams looking for a new boss after they fired Mickey Callaway last week.
According to WFAN baseball insider Jon Heyman, Carlos Beltran is a "very serious candidate" to be the next Mets manager.
Hearing Carlos Beltran is very serious candidate for Mets manager. Has close relationship w/key FO guys Allard Baird and Omar Minaya, both said to support. @Ken_Rosenthal 1st linked CB to job. Interestingly, 3/4 known candidates have no MLB managing experience; also Bell, Shelton
— Jon Heyman (@JonHeyman) October 11, 2019Beltran spent seven years playing for the Mets, and he actually already has a baseball job in the New York area. The Puerto Rican was hired by the Yankees in December 2018 to be a special adviser to general manager Brian Cashman. Beltran lives in New York and certainly knows what it takes to have success here.
That being said, Beltran doesn't have any managerial experience. He interviewed for the Yankees job back in 2017, but Aaron Boone was ultimately chosen to fill the role.
Callaway also didn't have any experience managing in the big leagues before he was appointed. So, it's really just a question of whether the Mets are fine with another inexperienced coach, or if they decide they want someone who has managed at the top level before.
Assuming Joe Maddon is hired by the Angels, Joe Girardi is the most experienced manager on the market. He reportedly interviewed with the Cubs for eight hours on Thursday.
Beltran and Girardi are both set to interview for the Mets job, as are Mike Bell and Derek Shelton. Shelton's stock is high as he is the bench coach who has helped preside over the success that Rocco Baldelli's Twins had this season. Bell has coached in the minor leagues and is currently the Director of Player Development for the Diamondbacks.
