New York Giants cornerback Sam Beal became the third player to opt out of the 2020 NFL season on Wednesday due to COVID-19 concerns, joining left tackle Nate Solder and wide receiver Da'Mari Scott.
Whether or not there is an underlying reason that would qualify Beal as high risk in uncertain.
The 23-year-old was drafted by the Giants in the third-round of the 2018 Supplemental Draft, but he has not quite gotten an opportunity to show what he can do in the NFL.
He spent his entire rookie season on the IR due to a shoulder injury and was limited to just six games last year due to leg injuries.
With DeAndre Baker on the commissioner's exempt list, Beal was thought of as a potential starter opposite James Bradberry in the Giants secondary.
While there are plenty of internal candidates to fill in at corner, free agents Logan Ryan and Dre Kirkpatrick could also be options should they look outside to address their needs.
Players have until Thursday to opt out.
