Before he arrived in New York, Semyon Varlamov was a mainstay in Colorado.

Varlamov's lengthy eight-year tenure with the Avalanche ended last season when he signed a four-year deal with the Islanders. The 31-year-old returned to his former home for the first time as the Islanders fell to Colorado 3-1 on Wednesday night.

Varlamov, like all players who played a significant role for a team, was honored with a mid-game tribute video. The montage consisted of Varlamov's most memorable moments in Colorado before the Pepsi Center crowd applauded its former goaltender.

He reciprocated the gesture, saluting those in attendance. Former Avs teammates Nathan MacKinnon and Gabriel Landeskog fist-bumped Varlamov following the standing ovation.

Varlamov spent most of his professional career with the Avalanche after he was traded in 2011. He rose to promience between the pipes, leading the Avalanche to three playoff appearances. The Russian-born goalie earned a Vezina Trophy nomination as he appeared in 389 games — trailing only Patrick Roy for most games played among Avalanche goaltenders.

The Islanders were one of the few teams to pursue Varlamov, who had been riddled with injuries over the past few seasons, last offseason. Varlamov leads the Islanders with 17 wins and posted a .918 save percentage. New York sits fourth in the Metropolitan Divison with 72 points.
