One day after canceling their men’s and women’s basketball tournaments, the Ivy League announced the end of all spring sports for the 2019-20 school year because of the coronavirus outbreak.“With further developments in the outbreak of COVID-19, the Ivy League Presidents are announcing their unanimous decision to cancel all spring athletics practice and competition through the remainder of the academic year,” the press announcement read.

The Ivy League announced students will not return to campus after spring break, instead holding all classes virtually for the rest of the semester. The conference determined continuing spring sports while students are not allowed on campus would not be feasible.Canceling the season forces a difficult end for the student athletes set to graduate this spring. Even if the NCAA allows them an extra season of eligibility, there’s no guarantee they'll be able to return to school for an additional year as many might already have career commitments.

Additionally, the Ivy League announced they will leave it up to individual institutions as to whether or not winter teams and athletes that qualified for postseason play should participate. That decision includes the Yale men’s and Princeton women’s basketball teams who earned automatic bids to the NCAA Tournaments.
