Jacob DeGrom's Cy Young Award Damaged

Jacob deGrom's Cy Young Award is headed to the shop.

The emblem of the Mets ace's dominant 2018 season was damaged when it was shipped from New York to Florida, ESPN's Jeff Passan reported.

Four letters were chipped and there's a chunk of wood missing from the back of the plaque, Passan reported. The Mets are sending it back to the manufacturer to be fixed.

DeGrom went 10-9 and led the majors with a 1.70 ERA last season. He received 29 of 30 first-place votes for the NL Cy Young, beating out the Nationals' Max Scherzer.

As pitchers and catchers reported to spring training in Port St. Lucie, Florida, this week, news broke that deGrom and his agent have set a deadline of Opening Day to work on a long-term contract extension. He is under team control through the 2020 season. 

The Mets announced Thursday that deGrom will be the team's Opening Day starter on March 28 at Washington.
