The Mets are reportedly showing interest in reliever Jeremy Jeffress to help their bullpen, according to the New York Post.
The right-hander recently became a free agent after the Brewers let him go. He struggled in 48 appearances, going 3-4 with a 5.02 ERA in Milwaukee. This comes after he made the All-Star team last season.
If the Mets were to sign Jeffress, he would not be eligible for the postseason, as players have to be with the organization by Sept. 1. That is of course if the Mets make a late push to get there. They are currently 4.5 games back of the Cubs for the second NL Wild Card spot.
The soon-to-be 32-year old pitcher could be worth a shot for the Mets, who have gotten almost nothing from the likes of Paul Sewald, Tyler Bashlor, Daniel Zamora and the other minor league options they have thrown into the fire. Brad Brach, who the Mets added in August after getting let go by the Cubs, has also struggled with a 5.63 ERA in nine appearances.
It hasn't helped the Mets that Edwin Diaz and Jeurys Familia are also having their career-worst seasons by a mile. Jeffress is reportedly looking for a deal that would guarantee him a contract for 2020, but it's unclear if the Meta are willing to make that committment.
