The Nets will open training camp Friday with Kyrie Irving already banged up.
The team announced Wednesday that their newly acquired superstar point guard suffered a facial fracture on his left side when he took an elbow to the head during a pick-up game Tuesday at the team's practice facility. He is being listed as day-to-day.
A six-time All-Star, Irving signed a four-year, $136.5 million contract with the Nets in July.
It's not the first time Irving has suffered a facial injury. While playing for the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2012, he broke a bone in his jaw. And while with the Boston Celtics in 2017, Irving suffered a minor facial fracture. Both injuries required him to wear a mask on the court.
The Nets' first preseason game is Oct. 4. The regular season begins Oct. 23.
