Report: Clemson LB Isaiah Simmons Might Be Too Hard For Giants To Pass Up

Once again, the Giants are picking near the top of the NFL draft.

Last year, New York had the No. 6 pick, which Dave Gettleman used to draft Daniel Jones. This year, the Giants are two spots better. They’ll pick fourth overall, giving Gettleman a few different directions that he could go in.

There have been some questions about whether the Giants should trade the pick, but SNY’s Ralph Vacchiano is hearing that the pick might present too great of an opportunity. He reports from the NFL Scouting Combine that scouts around the league believe that Clemson linebacker Isaiah Simmons will be too tantalizing for the Giants to pass up at that point of the draft.

Simmons is an impressive talent. At the combine, he weighed in at 238 pounds and ran a 4.39-second 40-yard dash. That type of speed isn’t often found in linebackers, but it also doesn't mean the other parts of Simmons' game are flimsy.

In 2019, Simmons had 104 total tackles and eight sacks. He also contributed three interceptions and two forced fumbles to a Clemson team that only fell at the final hurdle: LSU in the national championship game.

Drafting Simmons would make sense for the Giants. Last year’s team lost so many games in large part because its defense was one of the worst in the league. And now there is a noticeably void at linebacker after longtime LB Alec Ogletree was cut last week.

If the Giants were to trade the pick, they might trade it to another team that’s looking to draft a quarterback. That team would then be in prime position to draft Alabama QB Tua Tagovailoa, if he’s still available.
