While the other baseball club in New York fights for a trip to the World Series, the Mets are looking for a new manager.
Carlos Beltran came out recently and said that he turned down opportunities to interview with the Padres and Cubs because he is only interested in being the Mets manager. Beltran has already interviewed for the opening, according to multiple reports, but he’s not the only one coming in to discuss the position.
According to Mike Puma of the New York Post, the Mets will also interview Eduardo Perez for the job.
According to SNY's Andy Martino, this will be a second interview for Perez with the Mets. The first interview was conducted over the phone.
The 50-year-old joins a list of candidates that also includes Beltran, Joe Girardi, Derek Shelton, Mike Bell and Luis Rojas. WFAN baseball insider Jon Heyman reported Friday that Beltran has emerged as a "very serious candidate" for the job. It’s unclear, but the others have either already interviewed for the job or are scheduled to do so this week.
Girardi is the only person on that list with previous experience managing in Major League Baseball, but he may be plucked up by another suitor. As of Monday, there were still eight managerial vacancies around the league.
It’s tough to know what kind of manager Perez would be, but if the Mets decide to go with someone without experience, Beltran seems like the more likely choice.
