Almost since the 2019 season ended, the Mets have been linked to a potential trade for Pirates center fielder Starling Marte. As the offseason dwindles, SNY's Andy Martino says the two teams remain far apart on a deal.
According to Martino, the Pirates asking price for Marte remains high and would likely need to include major league talent as well as prospects. Mets outfielder Brandon Nimmo has been rumored to be linked to a possible trade for Marte. But at 31-years old, Marte has reached his major league ceiling, whereas Nimmo is still a developing player who likely has not peaked.
According to multiple league sources, Pirates still seem to be in stage where the ask is big — major leaguers and prospects. Probably have to come down before Marte is moved anywhere.
— Andy Martino (@martinonyc) January 24, 2020Marte has spent his entire eight-year career in Pittsburgh. A two-time gold glove winner, Marte made the National League All-Star team in 2016. The Pirates outfielder is coming off his best statistical major league season after hitting .295 with 23 home runs and 82 RBIs in 2019.
Marte is set to earn $11.5 million this season and $12.5 million in 2021 before he becomes a free agent. Nimmo will make just over $2 million this season and remains under team control until 2023.
Without Marte, the Mets are likely to feature Nimmo and Jake Marisnick in centerfield this season. Marisnick, known for his glove, was acquired by the Mets in a trade with the Astros earlier this offseason.
